In a stunning variant cover celebrating Disney’s 100th anniversary, Mickey and friends take on the roles of the New Avengers.
A new Marvel variant cover is putting Mickey Mouse in the leadership role for the New Avengers in celebration of Disney's 100th anniversary. There have been countless Avengers teams over the years, and each iteration of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes has had members come and go with the leader changing over time as well. The most famous lineup has undoubtedly been Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor with an increased popularity due to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; but other groups such as the Young Avengers and the West Coast Avengers have given the spotlight to other heroes. However, a new variant cover is giving fans a glimpse at a new type of Avengers team that features some of Disney's most iconic characters.
As part of a press release from Marvel celebrating the 25th issue of the latest incarnation of Amazing Spider-Man by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr. and Kaare Andrews, one of its variant covers designed by Donald Soffritti features Mickey Mouse and friends taking on the roles of the New Avengers. The cover is a Disneyfied homage to David Finch, Danny Miki and Frank D'Armata's classic cover for 2005's New Avengers #1. While they're concealed in shadows, it's clear who each character is in their Marvel makeovers. Mickey takes the role as Captain America, which is fitting for him as the head of the House of Mouse. Meanwhile, Goofy takes over for Tony Stark as Iron Man, Donald Duck swings into action as Spider-Man with Daisy Duck alongside him as Spider-Woman, and Minnie Mouse shows off a darker side as Wolverine. Take a look at this stellar new Disney team here!
What's remarkable about this cover art is how it showcases the change in tone between the original appearance of the Avengers in the Silver Age of Comics and the New Avengers during the Modern Age. In one of Disney's earlier crossovers with Marvel to celebrate their 100th anniversary, Mickey and his friends took on the roles of the original Avengers. The way they were depicted in the artwork showed off a goofier tone that was signature for the Silver Age of comics when the Comics Code Authority was in full effect.
Now, this updated version of the characters shows just how times had changed in the Modern Age. The colors are moodier with the characters having more of an edge to them as lightning cracks in the background. They were no longer bound to telling child-friendly stories every time. Instead, they could dive into more complex stories. Minnie's depiction as Wolverine alone shows how times have changed since she's shown with more grit just like the character in the comics.
Fans can pick up this new Disney variant cover when it hits store shelves with Amazing Spider-Man #25 on May 10th, 2023. Disney's takes on classic comic covers have made for some of the most fun variants to hit store shelves this past year. Now, their take on the New Avengers has undoubtedly taken the lead as one of their best as Mickey Mouse, Donald, Goofy and friends show they can lead Marvel's greatest team for their big Disney anniversary.
