It is one of the biggest fixtures in the sporting calendar for the country and a major event for Gloucestershire. But while tens of thousands of people flock to Cheltenham for the horse-racing festival next week, residents will have to contend with road closures.
Fans and daytrippers will be rubbing shoulders with celebrities when Cheltenham Festival begins on Tuesday March 14 to its climax on Friday March 17 when the Gold Cup is held.
To make sure people get safely to and from Cheltenham Racecourse and to keep traffic to a minimum, Gloucestershire County Council has issued a list of roads that will need to be closed or have measures put in place.

Gloucestershire County Council has made an order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended) to temporarily close and restrict part of the lengths of roads as detailed below.
A40 London Road
The A40 London Road will be one way from its junction with the south-eastern kerb line of Old Bath Road to its junction with the north western kerb line of Sandford Mill Road.
Old Bath Road
From its junction with the northern kerb line of Sandford Mill Road to its junction with London Road traffic will flow in one direction from southwest to northeast
A435 Evesham Road (10am to 8pm; this restriction will be lifted between the hours of 1.30pm and about 4.30pm if it is deemed safe to do so) southbound only
From Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction to the Racecourse roundabout with the exception of Racecourse Labelled vehicles. (The actual closure will be at gate 8/9 where non-labelled traffic will be turned around).
B4075 New Barn Lane
From A435 Evesham Road (Racecourse Roundabout) to Albert Road. (3.30pm – 7pm; to be closed to through traffic only for about two hours within this period depending on time of last race).
Albert Road
From its junction with New Barn Lane to Prestbury Road, except for the purpose of obtaining access to premises in Albert Road or to premises where access can only be obtained from Albert Road, or for use by buses, taxis and horseboxes. (10am to 1pm) and (4pm to 8pm)
Voxwell Lane
From its junction with Two Hedges Road to the A435 Evesham Road except for the purposes of obtaining access to premises in Voxwell Lane or to premises where access can only be obtained from Voxwell Lane, or for use by buses. (3.30pm to 8pm)
Hill Court Road
From its junction with Evesham Road to Albert Road, except for the purpose of maintaining access to premises in Hill Court Road or to premises where access can only be obtained from Hill Court Road or for use by buses.
A435 Evesham Road, from the Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction to Racecourse Roundabout; both sides of road. To be in place 24/7 on race days.
Kingsditch Lane/ Wymans Lane, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, closed to traffic travelling south at its junction with Runnings Road. Traffic exiting Runnings Road will be prohibited from turning right.
Swindon Road, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, closed to traffic travelling in an eastbound direction at its junction with Kingsditch Lane. Traffic exiting Swindon Road will be prohibited from turning right.
There will be no waiting for all vehicles, with the exception of buses, from 7am to 2pm at Pittville Street, on both sides, from a point 15 metres north-east of its junction with High Street for a distance of 58 metres in a north-easterly direction.
There will be no parking and no waiting both sides of Mandarin Way from its junction with Windyridge Road to the junction of Seneca Way for a distance of 490 metres, from 10am to 8pm.
Articles 5 and 7 of The Borough of Cheltenham (Promenade) (Prohibition of Buses and Pedal Cycles) Order 1991 [Variation to the Borough of Cheltenham (Central Area) (Pedestrian Priority) Order 1987].
The Roads as described above fall into the parishes of Prestbury and Swindon of Cheltenham Borough; the Wards of Battledown, Charlton Park, College, Pittville, Swindon Village, Cleeve Grange, Cleeve West and Cleeve Hill of Cheltenham Borough; and Parishes of Bishops Cleeve and Southam of Tewkesbury Borough.
Please note that other roads may be affected at the discretion of the police to aid the safe passage of traffic.
The reason for the closures and restrictions is to manage traffic during major events at Cheltenham Racecourse.
The roads are expected to be closed and restricted at certain times between March 14 2023 and January 1 2024. The Jockey Club will provide at least 28 days notice to Gloucestershire County Council for any such event. It is likely that it will be predominately in use from March 14 2023 to March 17 2023 and November 10 2023 to November 12 2023. The presence of approved signage will indicate whether the restrictions are in place.

Alternative Route: As signed on site. Pedestrian access to premises on or next to the road and emergency access will be maintained.
