Borussia Mönchengladbach gave a good account of themselves at home to Manchester City FC on Wednesday evening, but ultimately the 1-1 draw at BORUSSIA-PARK was not enough to keep them in the UEFA Champions League this season.

Goals: 1-0 Raffael (23′), 1-1 Silva (45′)
Sent off: Stindl (51′), Fernandinho (63′)
Gladbach went into the game knowing only a win would do to keep their hopes of staying in the competition alive and they duly began boldly, denying their visitors time to settle on the ball. The Foals’ confidence grew as the match wore on, and Raffael put them in front with an emphatic finish from the edge of the box following good work from Lars Stindl down the left. However, City equalised with almost the last kick of the first half when David Silva flicked in a cross from former VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
Matters took a turn for the worse for Gladbach early in the second period when Stindl was sent off for a second bookable offence. The English side dominated possession thereafter, but there was another twist when City also went down to ten men, with Fernandinho given his marching orders too. Andre Schubert’s charges looked to snatch a late winner that would have given them a lifeline in the competition, but there were no more goals in an entertaining encounter that ultimately sent Gladbach out.
